Since we have been taking about groceries lately I thought I would touch on coupons. Problem is that I don’t usually use them. We most often buy our pantry items in bulk. We buy flour sugar and old fashioned oats in 50 lb bags. We buy spices by the pound and meat in family packs. we raise our own chickens for eggs and have dairy cows for milk. I do buy cheese because we really like it and use it faster than we can make it sometimes. We make our own breads, rolls, and even tortillas. That leaves mostly cleaning supplies and things like side items. Even some cleaning items we make ourselves like laundry soap, but there are other things like shampoo and such.

So, back to the coupon question. There aren’t too many name brand things we use but there are a few. Not too long ago I got a really good deal on toothpaste, 25 cents a tube for the bigger tubes. I bought enough to last a year, but now they are gone and since it is one of the few things that matters as far as brand name to hubby I have been watching the Sunday paper. For awhile I have been hearing about something called the Grocery Game. It has to do with the best way to save using Grocery Coupons and store sales. It is something that looks like it will work, as I learn more about it, I will be reporting back. Stay tuned.

Shopping without a list is one of the biggest money wasters. We live 15 miles from Walmart, Now that isn’t a million miles away but it seems like it, especially when gas prices are high and you drive a big van and you have several children. So I plan shopping trips and plan them well. I get my shopping lists and all of the Sunday Paper ads and make myself a list of all my stops and a list for each stop. If I have ads for things I note that next to the item on the list. I make my master list in order of my stops and they are in order of a well planned route.

My master list would look something like an outline. Here is an example.

post office – check P.O. Box

bank – deposit

Walmart

cheese (3/$5 Kroger ad)

sour cream

tortillas

bananas (39 cents Piggly Wiggly ad)

and so on….

next up, how to assemble and use a pricebook
