comparing apples with apples

October 19th, 2009 · 1 Comment · get it in order

I have a friend named Denise who shops for all foods by the pound. Honestly she does. she tries to never spend over a dollar a pound on anything. I have learned from her. I started by looking at fruits. Of course I pay attention to what is in season and what looks good but I compare it with the per pound price. If apples and oranges and grapes are all on sale for 99 cents a pound, I will get my favorite. But if two of them are 99 cents a pound and one is 39 cets a pound, can you guess what we will be eating a lot of that week?

Same with meat. If ground beef is $1.49 a pound and so is chuck roast I will get the roast. But if steak that is normally $8.99 is on sale for $4.99 it may be a great sale but for this big family I would still rather have 3 times as much chuck roast. See what I mean? Instead of just comparing like items we need to compare what you get for the price and compare prices per item. Does that make sense?

Likewise in other items. I recently was shopping for a new desktop pc. The old one was costing a fortune to run, and overheated so I also had to put a fan on it AND it wasn’t working right. Now since Windows 7 is coming soon everybody in town had sales and I could find all kinds for $399. $399 is a good deal, a very good deal. But it isn’t a good deal if it isn’y what I need. I really like comparison sites such as the ones you can find for web site hosting. They take all of the hassle out of trying to compare things. I can see what I am getting for what cost.

I learned the same thing a few years ago, and I believe it was from the same friend! I have definitely found that it makes buying decisions easier.
